Johnny Depp has portrayed many roles, from the more eccentric roles like Sweeney Todd, and Captain Jack Sparrow, to the more toned down "normal" roles such as Gilbert Grape and Donnie Brasco but his new movie Black Mass may be the most dark, creepy, evil movie he has put out to date.
In Black Mass, Depp portrays James (Whitey) Bulger, a notorious Boston crime boss/snitch who has charges such as racketeering, money laundering, drug dealing, and even 19 cases of brutal murder. Bulger was number 2 on the FBI's Most Wanted List donning a $2 million reward, second only to Osama Bin Laden. Bulger Climbed to the top of the crime scene in Boston through his exceedingly brutal and violent tendencies and his connection with the criminal justice system through an FBI agent named John Connolly. Connolly would feed Bulger information about the crime scene in Boston from the criminal justice side and Bulger would feed Connolly from the criminal side. It was a symbiotic relationship that lead to Bulger becoming one of the most prominent criminals in the history of the United States.
Bulger was Captured in 2011 in Santa Monica California after 16 years of being on the run. He was then shipped back to Massachusetts where he was found guilty on 31 out of 32 charges and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus five years in prison. Bulger currently serves out that sentence at Coleman II, a high-security penitentiary in Sumterville, Florida.
Bulger was recently the subject of a project by three teenage girls in Massachusetts and was the recipient of a letter asking for advice on Leadership. Three weeks later, to their surprise, they received a response from Bulger. In this letter he writes things such as, "...There are many people more deserving of your time and interests..." and "...we are society’s lower, best forgotten, not looked to for advice..." indicating a certain amount of regret and more signs of remorse than he has ever shown before publicly.
Black Mass hit the theaters on September 18, 2015 and has grossed $46,616,030 as of October 1, 2015.
